Western Or Indian Toilet, What's Better? Know From Ayurveda Expert
If you are suffering from chronic constipation, haemorrhoids, piles, or colon-related problems then you should stop using the western toilet.

Constipation is quite a common problem among the elderly population and pregnant women. It can happen due to lack of fibre, dehydration or not getting proper exercise which can disrupt the bowel movement. Constipation can make you feel bloated and passing the stool becomes painful. If you exert too much pressure, it can cause your anus to swell up or even bleed.

Apart from changing your diet, drinking adequate water and working out, you can also consider changing the position of how you sit to poop. An improper posture can cause piles and haemorrhoids. So, which is better- an Indian or Western toilet?

Ayurveda and Gut health coach, Dr Dimple Jangda shared a few disadvantages of the western toilet. As per her, if you are suffering from chronic constipation, haemorrhoids, piles, or colon-related problems then you should stop using the western toilet as it can prevent a smooth defecation process. Or you can improve your sitting posture.

She shared that Western toilets require one to sit in an unnatural position. In this position, the puborectalis muscle, aka the pelvic floor chokes the rectum. The anorectal angle is also almost 90 degrees. This leads to incomplete evacuation of stool, irregular bowel movements, hard stools and much more.

Dr Dimple Jangda recommends squatting position which was a common practice in countries like India, Turkey and France. She shared that squatting has more health benefits as it allows for better relaxation of the pelvic floor and straightens the anorectal angle as well. Squatting position also protects from the nerves getting stretched which can lead to damage and permanent problems with urinary, defecation and sexual function. Squatting is an ideal position as it increases intraabdominal pressure.

She suggests yet another method if at all you have to use the western toilet. As per the expert, one can install a squatting seat or a step stool to raise the feet and imitate a squatting posture while using the toilet. This can prevent or ease symptoms of chronic constipation, piles, and haemorrhoids.

It is important to remember that an unhealthy colon contributes to 90 per cent of the diseases. The earlier you address your sitting position to poop, the healthier you will be.
