The bakery, which first opened in the Northern French city of Lille and is famous for its signature "Merveilleux" cakes -- mini-meringues coated in whipped cream -- has been named Best Bakery in the US State of New York by Yelp, a user reviews website for local businesses all around the world.
A lot has happened since the residents of Hazebrouck, in Northern France, were the only ones drooling over the creations of Frederic Vaucamps. From his first patisserie in Hazebrouck, Frederic Vaucamps went on to open his first Aux Merveilleux de Fred bakery in the neighboring city of Lille. After branching out across France and setting up in London in 2013 and Brussels the following year, Aux Merveilleux de Fred came to New York in 2015.
As New York goes crazy for the latest creations of French pâtissier Dominique Ansel, the Yelp ranking has honored another French concoction, right under the nose of the NY cake scene's current star. Taking into account the number of reviews plus the star rating for every bakery on the Yelp website, Aux Merveilleux de Fred came out on top as the Best Bakery in the State of New York.
Frederic Vaucamps' sweet treats were for a long time one of Lille's best-kept secrets, sold in his historic bakery on Rue de la Monnaie in the city's picturesque Old Town. This was the first store to specialize in making his signature meringue creations, enrobed in a surprisingly light whipped cream coating then rolled in mouth-watering toppings, such as flakes of dark or white chocolate, almonds, caramelized hazelnuts or crystallized meringue.
