Hariyali Teej is an important festival that is popular in North Indian states. It is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the Shravana month. During this time, married women observe this fast for the long life and better health of their husbands. In Hinduism, Teej falling in the month of Shravana has special importance. The festival of Teej is dedicated to Goddess Parvati.
On this auspicious festival, there is a ritual of performing puja, fasting, etc. for Goddess Parvati, and people also donate several makeup items on this day. During this fast, married women wear green clothes and apply mehendi. According to the Panchang, the festival of Hariyali Teej is celebrated every year on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravana. In 2024, the festival of Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 7.
To know more about Hariyali Teej, we spoke to Haridwar’s astrologer, Pandit Shridhar Shastri. Pandit Shastri told Local 18 that although it is a rule to keep the fast of Hariyali Teej without water if a woman cannot keep a waterless fast, she can complete it by consuming fruits, etc. during this fast. He said that on this day, women wear green clothes, apply mehendi to their hands, and adorn themselves with green bangles, green bindis, etc.
He further said that according to Hindu beliefs, the Hariyali Teej fast is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Women who observe this fast should offer 16 items of adornment to Goddess Parvati, so she becomes pleased and blesses them with unbroken good fortune. According to mythology, this fast was initially started by Goddess Parvati, who observed it to get Lord Shiva as her husband.
According to Pandit Shridhar Shastri, women who observe fast on Hariyali Teej should keep positive feelings in mind and avoid negative feelings or thoughts. Women observing fast on this day should stay away from debate and also take the blessings of elders so that they get the benefit of observing this fast.
