Whether we are working in the office or relaxing while binge-watching, our eyes are continuously getting strained. Eyes are complex organs, which need proper vitamins and different nutrients to function properly. Considering it to be the need of the hour, nutritionist Lovneet Batra dropped a video on her Instagram account, wherein she explained some of the crucial nutrients that must be consumed to boost eye health. She also detailed some of the easy DIY eye masks, which will help one get rid of puffy eyes, dark circles and other issues.

“We cannot stop fitting from one screen to the other. Be it the laptop to work or binge on Netflix, answer work emails, WhatsApp groups; we are always straining our eyes over something or the other,” read the caption.

Some of the drawbacks of excess screen time pointed out by Batra are puffy eyes, swollen under eyes, dark circles and more. She listed some of the crucial nutrients that must be incorporated into our daily meals to improve eye health:

Vitamin A

Vitamin A rich-food like sweet potatoes, mangoes, carrots, and pumpkin among others are extremely helpful in reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration of the eye. Vitamin A protects the eye from sunlight damage. Maintaining a clean and healthy cornea for optimal vision, the nutritionist said, “Beta carotene also plays a key role in maintaining a healthy cornea.”

Vitamin E

Food items almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and flax seeds maintain the optimal balance between antioxidants and free radicals in the body. Vitamin E keeps eye cells healthy.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C-rich food like amla, lemon, oranges, guavas, and tomatoes is a key proponent of making collagen, which is necessary for providing structure to the cornea and the sclera.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Green vegetables like spinach, methi, and peas are very helpful in filtering out the harmful high-energy blue wavelength and protecting the eye from degeneration.

Omega 3

Extremely crucial fatty acid, the expert says Omega 3 helps in saving our eyes from drying up and from discomfort. Apart from urging all to consume these extremely crucial nutrients, Batra pointed out some of the DIY eye masks that can be incorporated into our skincare routine and have amazing health benefits.

Those DIY masks are:

  1. Cold milk-dipped cotton eye pads. It helps remove dryness and dark circles if kept on the eyes for 15 minutes.
  2. Cucumber and mint water-dipped cotton eye pads. This should also be applied for 15 mins.
  3. Rose water-dipped cotton eye pads. Chill them for 15 mins before applying them to your eyes.
