Come Back To Me by RM, the leader of the K-pop band BTS, is topping charts around the world. Just a day after its release, the track reached number one on the iTunes Top Songs charts in 82 countries. The song was released alongside an almost six-minute long music video. In the short-film-like music video, RM is joined by a star cast of actors like Pachinko actor Kim Minha, Beef actor Joseph Lee and Kang Gilwoo from The Glory. The music video was directed by Lee Sung Jin, best known for making multiple PrimeTime Emmy Award-winning series Beef.
Recently Lee spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about what it was like creating the music video with some of the most popular stars in South Korea. He described the process of shooting the video as “assembling the Korean Avengers.” He added, “I know music videos are always a little bit tough and a little bit of a grind, and the fact that they showed up and gave such incredible performances, I’m really thankful.”
Lee said that initially, he had planned to add dance sequences but then dropped the idea. He said that the storyboarding of the music video was finalised after he had long talks with RM. At the end of these conversations, they arrived at the current storyline “about a man that is trapped in the past, present and future and seems to not be able to leave his own home”.
He revealed that on the “first take of the very first scene” RM hit his head with a camera and got a giant cut over his eyes. However, instead of cancelling the shoot, RM returned to the set after getting stitches in the hospital. Lee joked that he was scared of being deported from South Korea for “scratching the national treasure.”
The writer-director shared that Sam Yawn, a good friend of RM and part of the music collective Balming Tiger, reached out to him via Instagram DMs and asked him to come on board. Lee recalled, “I got the DM from him (San Yawn) and I thought he was reaching out to do something with Balming Tiger and I was like, “Oh, sweet, I love Balming Tiger.” Then he was like, “Oh no, this is for RM ” and then my mind was blown and I was staring at that DM for a while.”
