On June 12, 2024, BTS star Jin, the eldest member of the renowned Korean boy group, completed his mandatory military service. Jin, aged 31, was the first among his bandmates to enlist in the South Korean Army in December 2022, serving for 18 months. While fans worldwide eagerly celebrated his return, Jin, along with his team, had diligently prepared for his upcoming engagements and events. To reconnect with his fans, Jin hosted a live session on Weverse.
This session was extra special as it was also the first time in about two years that fans had the opportunity to hear directly from Jin. During the live broadcast, Jin reportedly talked about his experiences while serving in the military as well as how he felt after getting discharged. He also discussed his plans for the future, especially regarding the upcoming FESTA 2024 event. FESTA is an annual event that celebrates BTS’s debut anniversary.
During his Weverse live, Jin also revealed details of the “free hug event” he plans to host during this year’s FESTA. He explained that he would be offering hugs to 1,000 lucky fans.
“I need to talk about FESTA. I gave a good idea, but it received a lot of criticism. I took a look at it so let me try to explain. I took a draft with me from the start. Since I am in charge of the FESTA by myself this time, I contacted the organizer around October, November last year. But they were honest and said they already planned everything so there wasn’t much left to do. They asked me if I had any ideas. I said I wanted to do a free hug event, but they said no,” he explained as reported by Koreaboo.
Jin further said that the organisers were initially worried about the safety concerns related to such an event. However, they have now agreed to a free hug event that would be limited to 1,000 fans only.
“After that, I don’t think I paid much attention to it. I am sorry. The company and I prepared this event with good intentions. It became like this because I really wanted to hug many fans. I hope you can accept this with your hearts,” added Jin.
He also expressed that his decision to hold the hug event should not put any pressure or expectations on the other BTS members. “The hug event was my idea, and I don’t think the other members will do it. I did it because I wanted to. I hope this situation won’t be passed on to the other members. I don’t want people to say, ‘Jin did it, why aren’t they doing it.’ I hope no one makes this about, ‘so-and-so did it, what about them,” he said, as quoted by Koreaboo.
