A disciplined democracy is needed to make India stronger and youth can play a vital role in this, VIT chancellor G Viswanathan said here on Saturday.
“We are the largest democracy in the world but lack democratic institutions,” Vishwanathan said at the inauguration of the two-day ‘India Emerge Youth Summit’, a national meet of youth, at the VIT university.
The election process has become very expensive and disturbing, forcing people to become corrupt, he said adding that only youth could change the pathetic state of affairs.
“If youngsters living outside India were able to bring name and fame to this country, then why could not the youngster living here,” he asked.
The national event with the theme ‘Indian Policy Framework-Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ is being organised as part of the ‘GraVITas 2012’ techno-knowledge carnival, scheduled to begin next week.
Lagadapati Rajagopal, sitting MP from Vijayawada, who was the chief guest on the occasion, wanted the youngsters to take up the challenge to ensure that India regained its past glory.
In the past 65 years, India had made good progress in many fields and this tempo must be energized by the present day youth, he said. “Look at India with positive strength and you be the change,” he added.
Padmashree Malathi Krishnamoorthy Holla in her address told the youngsters to convert pain into achievement. Speaking about the pains she had undergone as a person with disability and how she managed to overcome them, she said, “my body might have been paralysed but not my mind”.
