Kin allege theft of 30 sovereigns; Police rubbish their claim..

TIRUCHY: A 46-year-old woman was reportedly burnt alive at Thiruvanaikoil on Thursday. While, her relatives alleged that around 30 sovereign jewels were stolen from her, the police rejected the claim. According to sources, Kanagaraj (58), an engineer with the Public Works Department at Karaikal in Puducherry, and his wife Latha Devi (46), were residents of Tiruvanaikoil. Owing to employment reasons, Kanagaraj used to be home only during the weekends. On January 31, Kanagaraj retired from service and planned to return to Tiruchy on Thursday. The following day, though he made repeated calls  to Latha Devi’s phone there was no response from his wife.On Thursday morning, he contacted one of his neighbours, who went to their house. As he could not find Latha anywhere inside the house, the neighbour went upstairs, only to find the woman’s charred body on the terrace. He immediately alerted the Srirangam police. A team, led by Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav and DCP (Law and Order) S Jayapandian, rushed to the spot. Latha’s body was later retrieved. While the victim’s relatives claimed that around 30 sovereigns  of jewels that Latha used to wear even while at home,  were stolen, police denied this.Fingerprint experts and a sniffer dog were later brought to the scene to look for possible clues. An inquiry is on.
