BANGALORE: A 32-year-old woman who was Assistant Manager with Infosys ended her life by hanging herself due to alleged harassment by her husband. The Hennur police arrested her husband in connection with the incident.Smitha Rao, the deceased, committed suicide at her residence in Mantri Splendor apartment in Geddalahalli on Hennur Road on Monday. The couple lived alone in the apartment. Smitha, also a former journalist with a few mainstream dailies, had joined Infosys, as an Assistant Manager in June 2010. She handled the online content for the company’s website. Her husband, Rohit Ananthakrishna, a software engineer with Google, has been arrested.According to the police, the couple had married in 2007 and there was no cordial relationship between them, it is said. They fought over trivial issues and this had resulted in marital discord. On Monday morning too , there was a fight between them before Rohit left for work. At around 9.30 am, she contacted him over the mobile phone and reportedly told him that it was her last call and he could never meet her again and had ended the call. Anxious over the conversation, Rohit left his office and rushed home.“By the time he reached, Smitha had hanged herself with a ‘lungi’ from the ceiling in the house. Rohit called an ambulance and took her to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead. Her parents, who reside at Shankaranagar in Mahalakshimi Layout, alleged that Rohit’s harassment has led their daughter’s death. Based on that, Rohit was arrested,” the police explained.Techie commits suicideA 26-year-old Jemshedpur-based software engineer committed suicide in her room at a PG centre in BTM Layout Second Stage on Monday afternoon. It is suspected that the reluctance of her boyfriend’s parents for alliance was the reason for the suicide. The deceased, Chaya Singh (26), who was working as an engineer at a company in Electronic City since four years. She was staying in the PG from the last two years. Chaya went to take a bath and did not come out for a long time. Later, the other women in the PG checked found her hanging from the ceiling of the bathroom with a wire. She left behind a suicide note in which she apologised for her extreme step and stated that no one was responsible for her death, the police said.
