BERHAMPUR: A tubectomy operation at Adapada primary health centre (PHC) went wrong last week. The family planning camp conducted by two doctors, including an ophthalmologist, saw 27 women being operated upon. However, R Mahadevi of Goutumi village complained of severe pain in the abdomen on the night of July 24. The doctors at the PHC said it was post-operative pain and would soon subside. The pain increased and Mahadevi had to be admitted to the City Hospital here on Sunday when her condition deteriorated. She was then referred to MKCG Medical where the doctors found a hole in her artery. She died on Monday. Even as Mahadevi’s husband R Narasingha Reddy alleged medical negligence for her death, CDMO Surya Kiran Patnaik promised an ex gratia of ` 15,000 for the bereaved family and a probe by the Additional CDMO. Berhampur Sub-Collector Ajit Misra handed over ` 5,000 to the bereaved family from Red Cross fund.Last year too, Damayanti of Tulu village had died after a defective family planning operation at Girisola PHC. Though the case was taken up by the administration and State Health Directorate, no action was initiated against the errant doctors. The matter was dropped without the victim’s family being paid adequate compensation.
