Who killed kariya Devi?
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsKariya Devi's exact age is not known. But she was estimated to be between 95 and 100 years the day she was carried, alive, by her four sons on to the funeral pyre of her dead husband. He again was estimated to be around 100-years-old. On September 20 around 4 pm the heinous act of Sati was allowed to happen in village Banayni of district Chattarpur in Madhya Pradesh yet again.
Thankfully the police got into action and all the four sons of Kariya Devi along with nine relatives were charged with murder. All the accused are under arrest. But are they the only ones who are responsible?
Exactly one month back, on August 20 a 50-year-old woman, Janakrani, committed sati in Tulsipara village of Sagar district. Tulsipara is around 200 km from Banyani and both are part of the Bundelkhand region that boasts of the Jhansi Ki Rani. (Bundele harbolon ke muh hamne suni kahani thee. khoob ladi mardani who to jhansi wali rani thee) And this is what emerged after Janakrani's Act.
The cremation of Janakrani's husband Prem Narayan Gaur, a paralytic for the past four years was done on a piece of agricultural land owned by the family about 100 meters from their house. The family for some unknown reasons chose not to take the body to the village crematorium.
Janak Rani decked herself with sindhoor and bangles before she left the house for her husband's funeral pyre. Her family members later claimed that they had no idea about her committing sati but had no answer as to why they did not use the village crematorium?
The police was also prompt in announcing that there was no case made out against any one. No one was charged for murder or under the prevention of the Sati Act. The state government also took a cue from the police and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan ordered a magisterial enquiry in to the incident even as he announced that it was not a case of sati.
So had the government not gone into the cover up mode in Tulsipara would they have dared to burn Kariya Devi alive in Banyani ? What was the message that they got from Tulsipara? Was it that they could get away with it like the sons and family members of Jankrani.? Had they realized that they could be charged with murder, the relatives of Jankrani perhaps would not have been part of her sati act. All of them have families to feed.
So who killed Kariya Devi? Is it just the 13 people who have been arrested or do we need to look deep? And now this explanation that is offered for why not many people are bothered by what Kariya Devi did. She was aged between 95 and 100. Her sons wanted the rest of the world to worship her after they killed her.
