Hooghly: Two policemen sustained injuries while trying to stop a clash between two groups of anti-socials at a railway station compound in Hooghly district on Thursday, police said.

The incident started over an allegation of teasing a woman, who is the wife of an anti-social named Nani, at Rabindra Nagar area in the afternoon, they said. Nani identified his wife's teasers as members of another group from Bandal and found them at Hooghly railway station some time later, they said. A clash ensued and houses and shops were ransacked and policemen reached the spot to control the situation.

However, after seeing the policemen, the anti-socials jointly attacked the men in uniform. They fired in the air and pelted stones, which hit two policemen leaving them injured. The two were hospitalised and the situation is now under control, police said.

Picnickers and tourists had a tough time as the clash took place at the railway station. When contacted, District Superintendent of Police Sunil Chowdhruy said raids were being conducted to arrest the anti-socials.
