THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Yet another year draws to a close. The garbage issue, unfortunately, has been refusing to end for the last one year and more. For the second consecutive year, the city will wake to garbage woes with no immediate solution in sight. In a report that appeared in these columns on January 1, 2011, Mayor K Chandrika had put down her New Year resolution as implementing  ‘’disposal of garbage at source’’ in 100 wards. ‘’I hope 2011 would see an end to the problem,’’ she had said. But as yet another new year dawn breaks on Sunday, she would be praying the same with no hope that 2012 would save her. "Amidst the unfavourable conditions,  including the strikes and the weather, we could complete 90 per cent of the construction work of the leachate plant at Vilappilsala. It was after I assumed charge that even the piling works began. The plant has a capacity to treat 75 lakh tonnes of leachate. This year, we want to bring the garbage issues to an end. We also want to see the sewerage treatment plant coming up at Muttathara. It is also important just like Vilappilsala,’’ the Mayor said. It was during December 2010 that the Vilappil panchayat suddenly passed a resolution seeking the closure of the garbage treatment plant there. On December 26, the panchayat and Corporation officials met and talked over the issue. Soon after, the locals formed the Janakeeya Samithi, which launched the strike at Nedunkuzhy. This December, the panchayat (after having waited for one year) locked the waste treatment plant and took the keys home. While the city would lapse into a celebration this weekend, the top heads of the Corporation would have much to do. For, the celebrations would, naturally, lead to more waste generation. The Corporation officials, however, hope that the citizens would seriously consider setting up solid waste management mechanisms in their households this year and save them from further headache.
