Water supply to the Government Hospital in Aluva was disrupted at 10.30 pm on Monday, when the main pipeline was broken while the hospital authorities were trying to dig a new waste-dumping pit in the backyard of the hospital.
The water supply was restored by Tuesday noon, but the stench from the waste in the pit still persisted, although it was covered with soil.
The disruption in the water supply caused difficulties for the patients as well as the bystanders at the hospital. A few in-patients in the maternity ward even left for other treatment centres. Surgeries fixed for Tuesday were also postponed.
Patients in the maternity ward convalescing after delivery were also put to hardships without a drop of water. Complaints have been mounting ever since the management of the hospital was transferred to the district panchayat. Complainants allege that the day-to-day management of the hospital is in a total disarray.
