THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Waste disposal, a major headache of the capital city, will come up for discussion at a special Cabinet meeting here on Thursday. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy announced this at a post-Cabinet briefing on Wednesday. While innovative methods are available for safe disposal of garbage, this is one issue where the public’s cooperation is of vital importance, he said. ‘’It is a difficult situation. We can go forward only with total cooperation from the people. I will not blame them,’’ Chandy said. ‘’But now, new technologies are available; 75 per cent subsidy is given for setting up decentralised waste management system in homes and apartments,’’ he said. While Thursday’s meeting will have a state-wide importance, it will be of special significance to the capital city, where wastes had begun accumulating on the roadsides and households after collection by Kudumbashree Cleanwell workers stopped in December following the Vilappilsala plant closure. Despite several rounds of talks involving the stakeholders, the City Corporation and the Vilappil panchayat, the State Government has not succeeded in arriving at a lasting solution. The issue has assumed a grave dimension with the South-West Monsoon set to reach the State in June.
