KANHANGAD: Prohibitory order was clamped under three police stations of Bekal, Ambalathara and Kanhangad as two groups of people unleashed violence in the town. Police lobbed grenades and used teargas to quell the violent mob that attacked shops and burnt vehicles in the town and adjacent areas on the second day on Tuesday. Several houses and shops were stoned following clashes which started on Monday to protest the burning of an autorickshaw of a DYFI activist in the wee hours of Monday.What started as clashes between the IUML and the DYFI activists spread to other areas as two groups of people took to violence blocking the vehicular traffic and burning vehicles.As many as nine vehicles including a school bus were burned by the miscreants who also stoned several houses in the town. The traders announced the indefinite closure of shops in protest against the attack on shops and business establishments. The police resorted to lathicharge, lobbing of grenades and bursting of teargas to quell the mobs, but violence continued unabated.
