Villagers allege radiation from Tarapur plant causes cancer
Ghivli village is situated near the atomic power station and its residents allege that cases of people suffering from cancer has increased due to the plant

Thane: The Tarapur Atomic Power Station, located in Thane barely 15o km from Mumbai, is the first atomic power project of India. While the government has been promoting and building more nuclear power plants, the Tarapur Atomic Power Station has allegedly become a reason for deaths of villagers where it is located.

Ghivli village is situated very close to the atomic power station and its residents allege that incidents of people suffering from cancer has increased due to the plant. Ghivli has about 5,000 residents one of whom is Avinash More, who was labourer but now he is a painter. Avinash More's house is situated near the power stations boundary wall and according to him the nuclear radiation has affected his fingers due to which he cannot work as a labourer.

He claims his white blood cells have been damaged due to radiation which has reduced his immunity to diseases, and bones have also become very hard.

The other residents of the village also narrate a similar tale. Another villagers Madhu says that his family recently lost an eight-year-old child. According to Madhu his eight-year-old nephew died due to lung cancer as he was exposed to the radiation from the power plant.

Despite this Madhu and his brother are working in the power plant and have kept quiet as they fear that they will lose their job if they speak about the incident. There are several other villagers who don't want to speak about the plant and cases of radiation, fearing job loss.

Approximately 10-15 villagers die every year from cancer and even doctors are scared of visiting the affected village. The villagers have to go to the cities located several kilometres away for their treatment.

The radiation has allegedly not only affected the villagers but even other living beings . The water discharged by the power plant water is released into the sea which has led the disappearance of fishes. The mangroves are also disappearing from the area where water is discharged.
