Enraged by the attempted theft, the shopkeeper, along with his associates, reportedly beat the youth before tying him to the car's bonnet.

In a shocking incident, a man was allegedly assaulted and driven around after being tied on the bonnet of a car in Gujarat’s Godhra after he was accused of theft from a shop, a police official said on Saturday.

A video of the incident, which went viral among the netizens showed a man tied to the car’s bonnet with a rope, following which it was paraded through a market in Kanku Thambla village in Godhra.

The incident took place in Kanku Thambla village in Godhra taluka on Thursday where the man, Surjan Bhavri (30) had gone to a fertiliser shop to purchase seeds. According to Bhavri, he took three packets of seeds for Rs 30 but forgot to pay for them. As per him, the shopkeeper, Ganpatsinh Parmar, thinking he had paid Rs 500, returned Rs 470, according to news agency PTI.

However, the shopkeeper then chased Bavri and accused him of theft for not paying for the seeds. Bavri claimed that he had forgotten to pay Parmar and handed him a Rs 500 note later. Enraged by the attempted theft, Parmar and his aides reportedly assaulted Bavri before tying him to the car’s bonnet.

“After Godhra taluka police was alerted to the incident due to the videos, a case was registered against the victim Surjan Bhavri (30) for attempted theft. An FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against Ganpatsinh Parmar and Manubhai Charan for alleged wrongful confinement, assault, causing insult etc,” the police official said.

The police investigation into the incident is currently underway, and further actions will be determined based on the findings.

This incident has sparked debate over vigilantism and the appropriate handling of petty crimes in society as more and more incidents emerge in different parts of the nation where people have resorted to taking the law into their own hands and resorting to cruel tactics instead of handing criminals over to the police.
