KOCHI: After the launching of video-conferencing facility in five districts, the Prisons Department will extend it to other jails across the state by the end of 2012.“The Central Government has allotted `10 crore for implementing the project. All jails will have video-conferencing technology by the end of this year or in the first month of next year. “The police are also implementing another project to connect all police stations and courts in the state. So the courts, the jails and the police stations will be linked through advanced technology,” Director-General of Prisons Alexander Jacob said. The project to connect jails and courts was first started in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts in 2010. Though video- conferencing is available in Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam and Thrissur, the facility is yet to be implemented in Ernakulam owing to some technical snags. “The project was implemented as part of the prison modernisation programme. The project would help speed up the judicial process and reduce the expenditure in transporting the accused to jails.  “Taking the prisoners in vehicles involves huge risk and it can be solved once the project is implemented,” said Jacob.  “The technical snag in the jails in Ekm district would be rectified soon. Last week, the Prison Department had conducted the trial in the Bangalore bomb blasts case through video-conferencing. “The failure of the electronic circuit had delayed the facility in some jails in Ernakulam. However, the video-conferencing facility is available in Ekm Sub-Jail where 16 terror accused are lodged,” jail sources said.
