The Vellore Bus Terminus will soon be expanded and modernised to match the facilities at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus in Koyambedu, health minister and Vellore MLA, Dr V S Vijay said on Monday.
The minister announced this during an inspection of the bus terminus on Sunday. With around 60,000 passengers using the Vellore new bus terminus everyday, the current 8.79-acre area did not meet the growing needs of the commuters. On an average 1,500 buses used the terminus every day, linking the neighbouring States of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
The usually crowded terminus tends to burst in its seams between Friday and Monday when commuters who study or work in Chennai or elsewhere return home.
Annoyed by the garbage piled up in the bus stand, the minister instructed the Corporation employees to maintain hygiene by keeping it clean and tidy. Noting that he had received complaints of excess charging at the pay-and-use toilet and the two-wheeler parking facility at the terminus, he said, “If the private contractors continue to charge high, the contract would be cancelled.” He said the present location of the Bus Stand belonged to the Cooperative department. The Government had purchased the land for `10.50 crore. The government had identified 6,090 sq ft of land located at the entrance of the bus terminus and that belonged to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department for the expansion of the terminus. He said the government was taking steps to take over 8.92 acre of private land adjacent to the bus stand for expansion.
Deputy Mayor V D Dharmalingam, Corporation Commissioner P Janaki, Engineer E Devakumar and Town Planning Officer Kannan accompanied him.
