THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The university and college teachers will take out a march to Raj Bhavan on July 2 protesting against the failure of the Central Government to implement the sixth UGC salary reform measures that were declared on December 31, 2008.The teachers are peeved that the government has ignored their salary arrears while put into practice the recommendations pertaining to other staff in universities and colleges.“According to the recommendations, the retirement age was to be made 65 and the salary of teachers were supposed to be increased. However, no state was ready to increase the retirement age to 65. ‘‘But even with respect to salary, we are yet to gain the full benefits afforded to us,” V Rajendran Nair, general secretary of AKPCTA, told reporters here on Thursday. The Union Government told State Governments that it would provide eight per cent of the additional expense that would be needed to put the new recommendations in practice.“However, the government is yet to set aside money for this”, said Rajendran Nair. Commenting on the issue of self-financing colleges, which is currently raging across Kerala, the union was of the opinion that measures taken by the government to privatise education and welcome corporates into the education sector was at the root of all problems. “In our Raj Bhavan march, we shall be raising this issue as well”, Rajendran Nair said.
