KOCHI: The US-based evangelist William Lee was arrested from the Taj Malabar hotel here on Saturday. He was arrested by the police team headed by Assistant Commissioner Sunil Jacob. The arrest happened before he voluntarily surrender before the Ernakulam Judicial First Class Magistrate. According to police officials, William Lee escaped to Bangalore in a private vehicle on the day he was detained from addressing a religious gathering at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor. There were speculations that he would surrender before the Ernakulam Judicial First Class Magistrate on Friday evening which was later postponed to Saturday morning. But the police foiled his plans and arrested him. He was presented before the Judicial First Class Magistrate who remanded him in judicial custody. He was then taken to Ernakulam Sub-jail. The case charged against him was for violating visa norms. William Lee was prohibited from addressing any public gathering in India. On getting information about his speaking at a gospel convention called ‘Musical Splash 2011’ organised by Faith Leaders of God at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor, a police team arrived at the spot and asked him not to violate the visa conditions. According to Assistant Commissioner Sunil Jacob, he was taken into custody after the alert issued by the Central Intelligence Bureau. The convention was interrupted mid-way and William Lee left for the hotel but escaped to Bangalore before the Police arrived to arrest him. Three members of the Faith Leaders of God are still absconding.The controversy looms now is that, how the evangelist could escape to Bangalore when whole security and police were issued alert. When the police were on toes, he could easily travel to and from Bangalore in a private car.
