US debates new H1B visa bill
The new bill would triple the H1B fees making it harder for companies who wanted to hire H1B applicants.

New Delhi: A new bill on H1B visa was introduced in the US Congress.

The bill would restrict the number of H1B visa and limit the number at 65,000.

The new bill, called the Defend the American Dream Act of 2005, introduced in the US House of Representatives.

Proposed by US Congressman Bill Pascrell, a Democrat from New Jersey, the bill seeks to curtail the H1B visa.

The bill would triple the H1B visa fees making it harder by putting strict controls and procedures in place.

Ralph Wyndrum, president of Institute of Electrical and Electronic engineers group, is backing Pascrell's bill.

The group opposes the H1B visa bill saying it displaces US engineers and replaces them with cheaper labour from outside.

"Basically this bill put some significant restrictions on the H1B visa programme. Fundamentally it tries to make sure that prevailing wages are being paid," said Wyndrum.

Immigration lawyer Cyrus Mehta said that he understands the emotions behind the bill, but argues what's needed is a more comprehensive immigration reform.

"Basically this bill his highly anti-competitiveness and it shows anti-competitive bias for US industry. There are other ways to resolve the problem of displace US workers, not through this bill," Mehta said.

This year's H1B visas are already over and US companies and foreign workers are now waiting anxiously to see what happens on Capitol Hill.

However there is doubt over approval of the bill as it is sponsored by a Democrat Congressman and the House is controlled by Republicans.

It is likely to give some good moments for Indians seeking next year's H1B visa.
