Ghaziabad: A protest led by former union minister Ajit Singh and his supporters turned violent in Gang Nahar in Ghaziabad on Thursday with the police being forced to use water cannons.

Earlier in the day, protestors pelted stones at the police, after which there was a lathi charge. Police say Singh's supporters had planned the violence. Around 20 policemen and five RLD workers have been injured.

Ajit Singh had called the agitation after the New Delhi Municipal Council ordered water and power supply cut to the government owned house allotted to him for overstaying.

Asked whether this kind of protest was fair, Ajit Singh refused to answer.

"The protest happened because the people wanted this house to be made into a memorial. Why didn't the government take appropriate action when they knew that the protest was inevitable.

"I am not supporting the protest but the cause," Singh said.

When asked whether violent protests were justified for the sake of a bungalow, Singh walked out without answering.

What's your reaction?
