Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has proposed to hike electricity tariff in Lucknow, Ghaziabad and Noida to about Rs 5.25 per unit. The corporation has sent its proposal to increase the rates to the state government pointing out that the three cities have to be provided electricity round the clock.
The power corporation has forwarded the proposal to electricity regulatory commission and the Uttar Pradesh government. The corporation claims that since it has to supply power round the clock to Lucknow, Ghaziabad and Noida, and needs to spend a large amount money to do so, therefore it was imperative that power rates be increased.
However, the corporation's proposal has met with strong opposition by the state consumer council. The consumer group said that people are already struggling due to rising prices of essential commodities and hiking power tariff would only add to their woes and was not needed.
The council said that corporation should be hike electricity tariff in all those areas where the government is providing 24 hours of electricity, including Mainpuri, Etawah, Amethi, Raebareli and Kannauj.
