A 25-year-old man, accused of murdering a minor son of an NRI doctor couple, on Saturday attempted suicide by hanging himself to a ceiling fan of his barrack in the Central Jail here, authorities said.

"Sushant Das tried to hang himself with a blanket given to him. However, a guard saw him and rushed to the barrack to get him down," Superintendent of Central Jail Gopal Tamrakar said.

He said Das was out of danger and a case of attempt to suicide was registered against him.

Das was arrested for allegedly abducting and murdering the NRI doctor couple's son Ishan (9) on June 22 last year.

According to police, Das had worked with the couple as a computer operator in connection with a medical project here and knew the family well.

Police suspect that Das was upset as the couple refused him job in a local hospital, which was set up with their partnership, and allegedly kidnapped Ishan and killed him to take revenge.
