THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The UDF Government on Wednesday decided to cancel the allotment of 2.3 acres of land to a relative of former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, citing irregularities. It also ordered a Vigilance probe into the land allotment.Addressing reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the Revenue Department has detected irregularities in awarding the land to T K Soman at Shenni village in Kasargod by the previous LDF Government. The land has been given flouting rules and guidelines and hence the government has decided to order a probe to find out how this has happened."When a 5cent plot of land is given to a poor man, the authorities insist that it should not be handed over to anyone else for at least 25 years. However, in this deal, it has been detected that this norm has been relaxed on 2.3 acres of land," said the Chief Minister."When there are strict guidelines that only up to one acre of government land should be handed over to any individual, in this case 2.3 acres of land has been given flouting norms and that too at a very cheap rate."Only a probe will reveal who is responsible for violating the rules. I am not ready to blame anyone now. The government will hold an impartial probe into the issue without any prejudice," he said.Asked whether his government would go for similar probe into other allegations levelled against the previous LDF Government by the then UDF which was in the Opposition, Oommen Chandy said all such allegations were under the consideration of the government. A probe would be ordered as per the merit of each case.
