Thiruvananthapuram: A tsunami mock drill organised by UNDP-supported Disaster Management Cell of City Corporation was held on the Valiyathura ground on Saturday evening. The mock drill witnessed the coordinated efforts of ward-level task force, doctors, employees of Fire and Rescue Services and the Coast Guard. Mayor K Chandrika inaugurated the mock drill which began at 3.30 p.m. and lasted till 5 p.m.
The ward-level task force, which consists of search and rescue team, first-aid team and shelter management team, began the rescue operations. It was the duty of search and rescue team to give warnings to the people. The ‘injured’ people were brought to the first-aid team. A medical team lead by Arun and Sanjay gave medical aid on priority basis depending on the gravity of the injury. A helicopter of Coastal Guard, fire engine and ambulances rushed to the spot to save the ‘tsunami-affected people’.
The City Corporation has formed disaster management task forces in 25 wards. The mock drill was organised to prepare the people to face disaster situations, to strengthen city emergency operation centres and to impart training to officers. The task force would conduct periodic mock drills. The tsunami mock drill was attended by ward councillors, officials of health, Fire and Rescue Services, Coast Guard, Corporation etc.
