BANGALORE: After cutting down trees in Sankey Tank area, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has planned to cut down at least 60 tress at Shamanna Garden near Hampingar (Also known as RPC Layout) for the construction of a rail under-bridge (RUB). According to BBMP sources, Palike has received the clearance to construct RUB near Railway Parallel Line in Hampinagar. Over 66 trees and 100 saplings will be uprooted. To do so, the BBMP has to discuss the matter with organisations working towards saving the green cover in the city. This comes after the High Court’s order to mandate the involvement of NGOs dealing with environmental issues. Palike has sent notices to environment groups, Railway officials and other stake holders. However, environment groups refused to attend the meeting. Vinay Sreenivasa of Hasiru Usiru said that though the High Court has ordered to involve environment groups, they were not ready to involve until a judgement copy was issued. However, the BBMP officials are already geared up to implement the plan. “RUB would be 9.5 metre wide and four metre tall in height. It is estimated to cost about `14 crore. The plan is ready, and we are waiting for the approval from people concerned,” the official said.Hampinagar Councillor Chandrashekaraiah said this action was taken to clear the traffic woes in that area, especially near railway crossing in Hampinagar. “To construct the RUB, there is a need to widen Padarayanapura main road. Hence, at least 20 trees will be chopped from Shamanna Garden,” he said.
