New Delhi: Traders in the capital on Thursday resorted to Gandhigiri to protest against the MCD's court-ordered sealing drive which is due to resume on November 1.
The traders gathered outside the MCD Headquarters in Chandni Chowk, where they placed colourful bouquets and cards with 'Get Well Soon' messages for the civic authorities and the state government, in sharp contrast to the violence that marred their bandh last month.
"We learnt that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a great supporter of the concept of Gandhigiri. Therefore, we hope through our protest today, he will understand our problems and address the issue," said General Secretary of the Confederation of All India Traders, Praveen Khandelwal.
The Prime Minister has all along been referring to the relevance of Gandhigiri, a coinage for non-violent means of protest made popular by Bollywood movie Lage Raho Munnabhai, in the modern day.
"The MCD authorities and state government officials seem to be suffering from some mental illness by carrying on with the sealing drive and we wish them a speedy recovery with these gifts," Khandelwal added.
The traders also pressed for legalising all shops existing on December 31, 2005 with a constitutional amendment. The traders' bandh against sealing on September 20 had turned violent, with five persons losing their lives.
