Hyderabad: As the annual two-day "Fish Prasadam" exhibition is underway in Hyderabad, thousands have queued up since early morning to cure their respiratory illness.
From children to elders, people from different parts of the country have flocked to Hyderabad with the belief that "Fish Prasadam" will cure asthma, bronchitis and other respiratory illness. The unique way in which the fish is administered has made it more popular.
A herbal yellow paste is prepared with a secret formula and stuffed inside a live Murrel fish which is slipped into the throat of the patient.
The Telangana government has made elaborate arrangements for the event. Around 1500 policemen have been deployed, in view of huge public gathering.
Thirty two counters have been set up for distribution of medicine.
"To avoid any untoward incident like stampede we have made special arrangements. People should also not panic, and remain calm," Hyderabad DCP Kamal Hasan Reddy said.
"Fish Prasadam" sufficient for 5 lakh people has been prepared by the organisers.
In 2015, 56,000 people took the prasadam. This year over 70,000 people are expected to receive it. While many rationalists question the cure as merely blind faith, the Bathini Goud family, who have been administering "fish prasadam" since 1845, said the cure is permanent and effective.
