MADURAI: The storage level in Vaigai dam touched 69 feet at 3 pm on Monday, following which a third flood alert had been sounded in the riparian areas of river Vaigai. Due to the depression in the Bay of Bengal, Madurai and its neighbouring districts have been experiencing incessant rains since October 31. The rains in the catchment areas had increased the inflow steadily.On October 31, the storage level in Mullaiperiyar dam stood at 123.50 feet with Vaigai dam reporting a storage level of 63.12 feet. On November 2, the storage level in Mullaiperiyar dam rose to 126 feet with an inflow of 4,070 cusecs. The level of Vaigai dam was 66 feet, with an inflow of 5,140 cusecs, following which the first flood alert was sounded at 8.30 am on that day.As rainfall decreased on November 5, in the catchment areas the inflow into the dams was also reduced and Mullaiperiyar had a level of 129.20 feet at 8.30 am on that day while the Vaigai dam had a storage level of 67.55 feet. On Sunday at 8.30 am the storage levels rose to 130.40 feet and 67.88 feet, respectively.Following heavy rain in the catchment areas throughout the day on Sunday, the second flood alert was sounded at 5 am on Monday. As the catchment area of Vaigai dam continued to experience continuous rain, the inflow increased to 2,978 cusecs and the storage level of the dam rose to 68.93 feet at 2 pm on Monday and it touched 69 feet an hour later, the third flood alert was given and 1,735 cusecs were being released. The dam had an inflow of 3,037 cusecs.District Collector of Theni K S Palanichamy, who reviewed the flood situation with his officials on Monday directed them to be alert round the clock and take necessary preventive action against damage.
