The news came as a surprise for all his fans and the film industry as well. He is survived by his wife Pamela and two sons, Aditya and Uday.
Yash Chopra turned 80 on September 27 and during an interview with Shah Rukh Khan he announced that ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ will be his last film as a director. The filmmaker, who started his journey with ‘Dhool Ka Phool’ in 1959, helped many actors in making their place in Bollywood. From Amitabh Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan, Yash Chopra gave a distinct identity to all his actors. Here are the most iconic characters Yash Chopra created...
The angry young man Vijay of ‘Deewar’: The film established Amitabh Bachchan as the angry young man of Bollywood. Right from Amitabh’s stylish look to his ‘Aaj khush to bahut hoge tum’ dialogue, the film changed his image in the film industry. The movie did exceptionally well at the box office too and won seven Filmfare awards. Thanks to ‘Deewar’, Vijay became Amitabh’s most popular screen name.
‘Noorie’: Yash Chopra had a special connection with Kashmir. His love for the picturesque valley was evident from his films. Poonam Dhillon played a Kashmiri girl in 1979 film ‘Noorie’. It is undoubtedly one of the most successful films of her career.
‘Chandni’: Sridevi, who just made her comeback on silver screen after 15 years with ‘English Vinglish’ is best known for Yash Chopra’s romantic film ‘Chandni’. She was cast opposite Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna in the film. Be it the ‘Mere hathon me nau nau choodiyan’ song or the honeymoon dream sequence, Sridevi got a chance to prove her mettle as an actress with the film. Her character was so beautifully crafted that the film looks interesting even now.
Ki Ki Ki Kiran from ‘Darr’: More than Juhi Chawla who was actually named Kiran in the film, Shah Rukh Khan became famous for this dialogue. Though Shah Rukh played a negative character in this psychological thriller, but the film really changed his career graph.
Raj Malhotra of ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’: Thanks to Yash Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are still called one of the best on screen couples in Bollywood. After ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, the name Raj Malhotra has become synonymous with SRK. No wonder he was named Raj in many other films after DDLJ.
Narayan Shankar of ‘Mohabbatein’: “Parampara, pratishtha aur anushasan, yeh is Gurukul ke teen stambh hain.” When Amitabh Bachchan was facing a tough time in Bollywood, it was Yash Chopra who brought him back as Narayan Shankar. The magic worked for the film as well as the actor. Yash Chopra and Amitabh shared a very close bond. He was last spotted at Big B’s 70th birthday bash.
Veer Pratap Singh of ‘Veer-Zara’: Probably Shah Rukh Khan will miss Yash Chopra the most. List of their successful films together is long. Shah Rukh Khan was unbeatable as an Air Force officer in ‘Veer-Zara’. In Bollywood, nobody can narrate a love story so simply as Yash Chopra used to. “Jab bhi apko kisi dost ki zurart pade, toh yaad rakhiye, sarhad paar ek shaks hai jo aapke lie apni jaan bhi de dega.”
Now his last film as a director,’ Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ will hit the screens on November 13, 2012. Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma play the lead roles in the film.
