Protests over the power tariff hike spilled over into Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed’s residence on Monday, and elsewhere in the capital, the police had to turn on water cannon to chase away demonstrators. AIYF activists entered the Manmohan Bungalow campus at Kowdiar in the morning and then attempted to barge into the Minister’s home shouting slogans. They were stopped by the police and Congress workers and later arrested and removed. DYFI activists had taken out a march to the Vellayambalam office of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission. Traffic was blocked on the Vellayambalam-Vazhuthacaud road while the demonstrators clashed with the police. DYFI leaders said that the agitations would continue until the govt rolled back the hike.
