Marandi was attacked after attending a football match near Bandam village.

Bhubaneswar: Three security men accompanying former MP and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Orissa unit president Sudam Marandi were killed by suspected Maoists in Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday evening, police said.

Marandi was attacked when he was going towards his vehicle after attending a football match near Bandam village, some 35 km from the district headquarters of Baripada.

"Three persons were killed. At least seven-eight gunmen attacked Marandi when he along with the security men was getting into his vehicle," Inspector General of Police (Operation) Sanjeev Marik said.

The assailants fled the spot. While local police said the attackers could be Maoists, Marik said that was still not clear. "The attackers were not in any uniform," he said.

"It is also not yet known if anybody was injured in the incident. Senior police officials have already rushed to the spot along with Special Operations Group personnel," he said.

Those killed are Naryan Chandra Pradhan, assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) of Chadua Police station, Gumbha Hembrum, the personal security man of Marandi, and Gobind Tudu, a police personnel (Gramrakhi).

"I don't know who the attackers were since the visibility was low. I was about to enter my vehicle when the attack happened," Marandi, who had a narrow escape was unhurt, told on telephone.
