KOCHI: The land acquisition survey for the widening of Vytilla-Petta road began on Tuesday. The survey is expected to be completed within two days. This is the first survey for land acquisition under the Metro Rail project.Owing to the opposition from the civil society groups, the authorities have agreed to consider a reduction from 30 metre norm for the width of the State Highways. “The alignment will be finalized only after the completion of the survey and discussion with civil society groups. It is expected to happen this week under the supervision of District Collector. We have already held a few discussions with the civil society groups on the issue,” said the Deputy District Collector Mohandas, in-charge of the survey. On the stretch between Vytilla junction and the Vytilla mobility hub, we are looking at acquiring land to widen the road upto 30- metres or more. However, beyond this stretch, due to congestion on the either side of the road, we may make concessions. But we cannot reduce the width of the road beyond 26-metres, he said.Places of worship, residential apartments and certain business centres are to be kept out of the acquisition drive. During an earlier alignment laid down by the PWD, more space was to be acquired from the northern part of the road, raising opposition from the residents to avoid the acquisition of a school on the road. However, this was resolved after the Collector agreed to balance the acquisition on both sides. The survey is being undertaken jointly by the Revenue Department and the PWD. The stretch from the Vytilla junction to the naval quarters at Chembakara is to be completed today. After the survey, the recordings will be submitted based on the PWD alignment.
