Surprise raids on Broadway shops

The intelligence wing of Kerala  Commercial Tax officials on Tuesday conducted surprise raids on shops at Broadway on the basis of a complaint that several shops were evading taxes. When the officials reached Broadway several shop owners came out with protest. But with the arrival of police, the raid resumed.

P C Joseph, Commissioner of Commercial Tax Department, said the raid was conducted on the basis of the complaint that several readymade shops are evading commercial taxes.

“The raid was conducted on five wholesale shops as part of the inquiry into the complaint. We have not seized any goods from the shops.”

However, he said that it was just the tip of the iceberg. “There are several wholesale shops evading taxes by not giving the correct details of the goods and the sale. We are planning to conduct a major drive against the defaulters who have been evading the taxes. The raid would continue in the coming days,” Joseph added.  The police officials said that no violence was reported.

“ The traders only came out with protest march. But they never disturbed the raid conducted by the commercial tax department. No case has been registered,” police official said.
