THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: What should be done with the priceless treasures unearthed at the Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple over the past week? Various organisations in the city have put forth suggestions.
The Deseeya Malayala Vedi has proposed an international museum at the temple as the hoard is part of history. The state committee of the Malayala Vedi which met at Thiruvananthapuram the other day said deep research and inspections are essential into its origins. Such study will throw light into the mysteries still to be unravelled in the colourful history of Travancore. "Since these treasures are part of history, a museum should be set up in the London model so that people from all over the world can view the treasures. The proceeds from the Museum should be used for charity works,'' Deseeya Malayala Vedi general secretary Alfonsa Joy said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Trivandrum Residents' Apex Council (TRAC) has suggested that the immense wealth should be put to good use. The Trust headed by Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the present head of the royal family, should be allocated shares in longpending projects such as the Vizhinjam seaport project, the proposed shipyard at Poovar and the monorail project. "It should be remembered that it was the Travancore Royal Family that originally initiated work on the Vizhinjam seaport,'' TRAC president Amaravila Krishnan Nair and general secretary K T Roy said. However, the TRAC leaders maintained that the immense wealth should not be handed over to the state government or the Travancore Devaswom Board, which will lead to its exploitation by politicians and the mafia. The armed forces should be called in to give protection to the treasure trove, they said."That is our stand. We are also planning to organise a 'Vishnu Sahasranamarchana' at the West Nada of the temple at 12 noon on Monday involving all devotees,'' committee chairman R Gopinathan Nair said.
