CHENNAI: Irate students set on fire furniture, books and bicycles at the PSG College of Technology here on Thursday, in protest against the sudden hike in hostel fees. They also ransacked the hostel warden’s room.According to the students, the college management had increased the rent to Rs 19,000 for an ordinary hostel room. An additional Rs 15,000 has to be paid now as boarding charge. Till last year, students were paying mess fees on a monthly basis. This year the college management asked the students to pay the mess fees in advance.“Last year’s room rent of Rs 14,700 included electricity and water charge. This time we were asked to pay Rs 5,000 for electricity and Rs 1,500 for water. Apart from this, we have to pay Rs 3,500 for Internet even though it is an optional facility. Besides Rs 3,000 was collected as ‘Salary and Wages’. This is an unreasonable hike,” one of the students said. Over 100 policemen were deployed on the hostel premises to control the protesting students.
