London: Two complete strangers married in Britain on Monday after winning the chance to tie the knot in a radio station competition that has drawn anger from religious leaders.
Ex-soldier Craig Cooper, 30, and his new bride Rebecca Duffy, 28, took their vows during a private ceremony at a plush hotel in Birmingham in central England.
Emerging to face the media afterwards, the newlyweds - who will now honeymoon in Bermuda - held hands, kissed in front of the cameras and revealed they were looking forward to getting to know each other.
The event, called "Two Strangers and a Wedding", is the second organised by Birmingham commercial radio station BRMB and attracted about 250 candidates.
The last time it was held in 1999, winners Greg Cordell and Carla Germaine married and honeymooned in the Bahamas but split after just three months, returning to their former lives.
Cooper and Duffy spoke briefly to each other on air three days ago. After returning from honeymoon, they will be provided with a house and the use of a car for a year.
Church leaders have described the stunt as immoral and called it "an affront to the institution of marriage".
