New Delhi: Sri Lanka is under-seige by the Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelam (LTTE). For the last two days, LTTE has stepped up operations and the Sri Lanka Government has launched an inquiry into how they managed to attack an air force base undetected.
And United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is worried by the escalating violence.
A spokesperson for Ban was quoted by PTI as saying, "He deeply regrets that air raids, military confrontations on the ground, and suicide bombings have become a daily occurrence, prompting massive displacement and suffering for civilians."
Ban appealed to the parties to end the conflict to break this vicious cycle of attack and retaliation, which only leads to more bloodshed. He urged the two sides to return to the negotiating table.
On Tuesday, seven people died in an LTTE attack early in the morning when a Tamil rebel drove a tractor and trailer packed with explosives into the Chenkaladi army camp in Batticaloa.
According to army sources, the vehicle exploded just outside the camp, killing seven people, including four soldiers and injuring at least 10 more.
On Monday in a pre-dawn attack, LTTE for the first time ever executed an air raid on Sri Lankan Forces at the Sri Lankan Air Force base north of Colombo.
Three people were killed and at least 16 injured when rebels used air power to bomb the Air Force base adjoining Colombo's international airport.
"LTTE deployed aircraft for the first time in a combat mission to attack the military base," rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiriyan was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
