Sterilisation tragedy: Chhattisgarh government sacks surgeon and chief medical officer
A statement from the state government said, "Keeping in view the situation and the public outrage, it is clear that sheer dereliction in discharging duties and negligence on the part of both officials have resulted to this situation."

Bilaspur: The Chhattisgarh government on Thursday sacked surgeon Dr RK Gupta, who conducted the failed sterilisation surgeries which claimed the lives of 14 women and left over 50 hospitalised, and also the Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Bhange for 'dereliction of duty' and 'negligence'.

A statement from the state government said, "Keeping in view the situation and the public outrage, it is clear that sheer dereliction in discharging duties and negligence on the part of both officials have resulted to this situation. No further investigation is needed to dismiss these officials under the provisions of Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules 1966 by the state government."

Earlier in the day, the Chhattisgarh police has arrested surgeon Dr Gupta as the first person to be arrested in the case. The state police is on the lookout for other doctors and assistants who helped him during the surgeries. The arrest comes after the National Human Rights Commission issued notices to the Chhattisgarh government on Wednesday, seeking a response within two weeks.

The Chhattisgarh Food and Drug Control department has banned the sale of 6 drugs which were used in the botched-up sterilisation camp in Bilaspur. Samples of the drugs and injections used in the surgery have been sent to the Central Drugs Laboratory in Kolkata.

Reacting strongly to the recent spate of deaths due to botched sterilisation surgeries in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh on Thursday said that the state government will take strict action against those responsible for the deaths.

The CM also said that a judicial probe will be ordered into the incident and none guilty will be spared. This even as the surgeon, who has been arrested for conducting the 83 botched sterilisation surgeries that left 14 women dead, accused the administration of framing him and blamed "poor quality" medicines supplied by the state government for the tragedy.
