Washington: St Louis, Missouri has retaken the undesirable title of most dangerous US city, according to an annual report.

St Louis, with a population of 350,000, has the nation's highest crime rates in both violent crime and property crime, but has shown some improvement.

St Louis was last named the most dangerous in 2002, and this year replaced Detroit, Michigan at the top of the list, according to the City Crime Rankings, an annual reference book published by Morgan Quitno Press, due to be released next week.

"While the city clearly struggles with crime, there is some good news: St Louis' property crime rate has fallen 14 per cent since 2001," Scott Morgan, president of Morgan Quitno Press, said in a press release on Monday.

Brick, New Jersey was rated the safest of the 371 rated cities with a population of at least 75,000.

The awards, based on the FBI's final 2005 crime statistics released in September, considers six crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.
