KOCHI: It is going to be days of soccer in Kochi from Monday. For the next 14 days, the city will see young blood in action. ‘Goal 2012’, an inter-collegiate football tournament organised by The New Indian Express at Maharaja’s College Ground, is poised to give football lovers an unforgettable soccer experience. The tourney will see 16 college teams from across the state fighting it out for the championship trophy. Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Ajay Maken will kick off the tournament to be held at Maharaja’s College ground at 2.15 p.m. Works Minister V K Ibrahim Kunju will preside over the function. Ace footballers I M Vijayan and Joe Paul Ancherry, Hibi Eden MLA, Mayor Tony Chammany, The New Indian Express Editorial Director Prabhu Chawla and others will also be present. Prior to the inauguration, Union Minister Ajay Maken will formally launch the tournament and release its theme song at a function to be held at Hotel Casino at 11 a.m. The initiative has been undertaken with a vision to bring youth power to the heights of world football. The tournament is unique in its structure and format. While the winners will walk away with a prize money of Rs 1 lakh and the champion’s crown, the runners up will receive a prize money of 50,000. In addition, there will be six individual awards for players in various categories, including the the best player of the tournament, top scorer, best goal keeper, best forward and others.The tournament, to be organised in a league-cum-knock-out basis, will feature the best 16 teams from four major universities in the state. It could well be the first time some of these teams face each other in a tournament. Hence, it would be a big opportunity for scouts from major clubs to spot young talent. The entry to the tournament is free.
