SAMBALPUR: The rain since Saturday evening which continued to pour through the entire night till Sunday morning saw many parts of Sambalpur inundated exposing failure of the Sambalpur Municipality to streamline the drainage system once again.The town received 43.1-mm rainfall from Saturday evening to Sunday morning throwing life out of gear. With most drains yet to be desilted since they were laid, rainwater overflowed onto the roads flooding Laxmi Talkies Chhak to Ashoka Talkies and Sambalpur Town Police Station to Golebazar, and Badabazar Chhak. Most of these drains are barely six inches deep with thick layer of silt deposited over the years. There are reports of rainwater entering houses in Housing Board Colony at Cheruapada and Mandalia while many low- lying areas were inundated resulting in loss of properties. The situation improved a little after rain stopped on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, 22 sluice gates have been opened at Hirakud Dam recording an outflow of 3,80,586 cusec of water against the inflow of 3,36,401. The water level at Hirakud Dam Reservoir stands at 624.81 feet. While 19.72 mm rainfall was recorded in the upstream, it was 18.04 mm in the downstream. Sources said 3,325 cusec of water is being released into Bargarh, 500 cusec into Sason, 44 cusec into Sambalpur and 7 cusec into Hirakud canals.Dam officials are monitoring the situation and would release water accordingly.
