HYDERABAD: As part of the International Level-Crossing Awareness Day on Thursday, the South Central Railway is launching a seven-day safety drive, with focus on safety at unmanned crossings. The number of accidents at unmanned level crossings is a cause of concern. At present, out of 2,295 level crossings on SCR routes, 1,038 are unmanned where accidents occur primarily due to road users failing to observe mandatory signboards, signals and basic traffic rules. The safety drive will include organising public awareness campaigns to educate road users and create awareness about provisions of safe crossing, safety seminars at various places in divisions including transport offices and educational institutions, deputing supervisors in the first coach immediately after the engine.Other measures include joint checks by Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police and civil authorities at level crossings to apprehend errant road users and ensuring availability of speed- breakers, road signs and stop boards at level crossing gates.SCR has formulated a safety action plan to eliminate unmanned level crossing gates through measures like construction of limited height subways, road over bridges, under bridges and manning unmanned crossing gates.
