Scorpions mildness on Nagapanchami still a mystery
Scorpions mildness on Nagapanchami still a mystery

Still, no studies have gave reason why scorpions do not sting villagers of Kandkur in Yadgir taluk on the day of Nagarapanchami even as villagers continued worshipping and playing with the scorpions on the day of the festival on Monday.

More than five thousand people, including the villagers and people from other parts of the state and Andhra Pradesh, took part in the Chelina Jatre (fair of scorpions) on Monday and offered poojas to scorpion god Kondammai. Children were seen putting scorpions on various parts of their body, including their tongues, much to the amusement of people from other places.

Priest Ramanna told Express that the worship of scorpions has been going on in the village for many decades.  More and more people were coming to the village thanks to the media coverage.

It was shocking to find out that neither the district administration or the Department of Geology know about the fair as Kandkoor was an isolated village bordering Andhra Pradesh.  When contacted, Deputy Commissioner Guruneet Tej Menon said that the district administration would celebrate the fair and make all arrangements to see it in a scientific manner.

DHO Dr Malikarjum Mukka said no cases of scorpion bites had been reported on the Nagapanchami day in recent 3-4 years.

What's your reaction?
