Politician and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu wants conviction overturned so that he can fight elections.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will on Tuesday judge whether politician and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu should get a stay on his conviction in a road rage death case so that he can fight elections in Amritsar.

The court had on January 18 reserved its order after hearing arguments from the prosecution and the defence.

Sidhu’s lawyer Harish Salve has told court that the Punjab and Haryana High Court had convicted his client on “erroneous consideration”.

The prosecution has told court that the conviction cannot be stayed on the ground that it prevented Sidhu from contesting by-polls.

Sidhu was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment for the offence of culpabale homicide not amounting to murder for the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in 1988 in Patiala.

Salve had contended that the incident dates back when Sidhu was a cricketer and he entered public life in 2004 and his conduct as a public person has been good.

The former cricketer was granted bail by the apex court after he had surrendered before a Patiala court.
