NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the petition filed by CPM leader M V Jayarajan seeking a stay on the contempt of court proceedings initiated against him by the Kerala High Court.The court asked why Jayarajan, who dared to criticise judges, was fearing contempt of court proceedings.“A person who made such comments should be ready to face the consequences also,” a Bench comprising Justice J M Panchal and Justice H L Gokhale said.Jayarajan contended that the High Court had initiated contempt of court proceedings without considering the facts. “The chargesheet was issued without handing over a copy of the visuals of the speech,” Jayarajan submitted.The visuals can be handed over once the contempt of court proceedings begin, the court said.The High Court had initiated suo motu contempt of court proceedings against Jayarajan after he made critical comments against judges for banning roadside public meetings during a public speech in Kannur on June 26 last year.The court, after examining available documents, video clippings and submissions by amicus curiae, concluded that there was contempt in his remarks.The trial proceedings in the case began on July 21. Jayarajan is facing trial under sections 2(c) and 12 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971.
