SC objects to tendency of lower courts to reduce rapists' punishment

New Delhi: Amidst rising cases of crime against women, the Supreme Court has slammed high courts and lower courts. It has taken strong objection to the practice of reducing sentences of rape convicts in cases where the survivor agrees to a compromise.

The Supreme Court has said this reflects extreme insensitivity to crimes against women. It has said the punishment should be commensurate with the gravity of such cases.
